How to Choose the Right Rug Size
A rug should usually relate to both the size of the room and the furniture placed around it. A rug that is too small can make furniture appear disconnected, while a rug that is too large may leave too little visible flooring around the edges of the room.
This calculator uses room dimensions and common furniture-layout principles to suggest a practical standard rug size.
Connect the seating area
A common approach is to place at least the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug so the seating group feels visually connected.
Extend beyond the bed
The rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed enough to provide a comfortable landing area.
Allow room for chairs
The rug should extend beyond the table so dining chairs can remain on the rug when they are pulled away from the table.
Popular Rug Dimensions
| Common Size | Typical Use | Approx. Metric Size |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 7 ft | Small seating areas, compact rooms | 152 × 213 cm |
| 6 × 9 ft | Small living rooms, full-size beds | 183 × 274 cm |
| 8 × 10 ft | Living rooms, queen beds, dining tables | 244 × 305 cm |
| 9 × 12 ft | Larger living rooms, king beds, larger dining areas | 274 × 366 cm |
| 10 × 14 ft | Large seating groups and spacious rooms | 305 × 427 cm |
Leave Some Floor Visible Around the Rug
In many rooms, leaving visible flooring between the rug and the walls helps frame the rug and keeps it from looking like wall-to-wall carpet. The appropriate amount depends on room size and personal preference.
Rug Size Calculator Questions
Should a living room rug go under the sofa?
It can. A common arrangement places the front sofa legs on the rug, while larger rugs may sit under all furniture legs. The best option depends on room size and the seating layout.
How far should a rug extend beyond a dining table?
A common planning approach is to allow roughly 24 inches of extra rug around the table so chairs can remain on the rug when pulled out. Larger chairs may require more space.
What rug size works with a queen bed?
An 8 × 10 ft rug is a common option for many queen-bed layouts, although smaller or larger sizes may work depending on room size, nightstands, and how far you want the rug to extend around the bed.
Does the calculator guarantee the rug will fit?
No. It provides a planning recommendation based on common rug sizes and layout assumptions. Furniture dimensions, doors, vents, built-ins, room shape, and personal design preferences can affect the final choice.
