How Much Flooring Do I Need?
Flooring is normally purchased by area rather than by the exact number of planks. Start with the room area, then add extra material for cuts, damaged boards, pattern alignment, and future repairs.
This calculator can also estimate the number of individual planks and full boxes when you provide the plank dimensions and package coverage.

Why Buy Extra Flooring?
Simple rooms
May be suitable for straightforward rectangular spaces with relatively few cuts.
Common projects
A commonly used planning allowance for many standard flooring installations.
Complex layouts
May be more appropriate for diagonal layouts, irregular spaces, many obstacles, or complex cutting.
Does Plank Direction Change the Amount?
The total floor area does not change when flooring direction changes, but the number of cuts and the amount of usable offcut material can. Diagonal layouts often create more cutting than straightforward lengthwise or widthwise installations.
For that reason, this calculator does not secretly modify the result based on direction. Instead, you choose the waste allowance that reflects your particular installation.
Check the Flooring Package
Flooring manufacturers normally state how many square feet or square meters each box covers. Use that figure whenever possible because package sizes vary considerably between products.
If the product is sold by full boxes, always round the required number of boxes up rather than attempting to purchase a partial box.
Flooring Calculator Questions
Does this calculator include flooring waste?
Yes. You can choose a waste allowance, and the calculator adds it to the measured floor area before determining how many boxes are required.
Can I use it for laminate and vinyl plank flooring?
Yes. It can be used for many products sold by area, including laminate, engineered wood, hardwood, and luxury vinyl plank, provided you enter the correct package coverage.
Does the estimate include underlayment?
No. The flooring quantity and underlayment quantity should be estimated separately because packaging and overlap requirements may differ.
Does it account for closets or irregular rooms?
Not automatically. For irregular spaces, divide the project into measurable rectangles, calculate their areas, and combine the total before using the calculator.
Is the cost estimate a contractor quote?
No. The optional cost calculation covers only the box price entered by the user and does not include labor, delivery, tax, underlayment, trim, transitions, removal, preparation, or other project expenses.
