How Much Light Does a Room Need?
Lighting requirements depend on room size and how the space is used. A bedroom may need less general light than a kitchen or home office, where tasks often require stronger illumination.
This calculator estimates the total lumen output needed for a room, then divides that amount by the lumen output of the selected fixture to estimate the number of light sources.

Different Rooms Need Different Light Levels
Lumens vs. Watts
Lumens measure visible light output, while watts measure electrical power consumption. Modern LED products can produce similar lumen levels while using much less power than older incandescent bulbs.
When planning brightness, use lumens rather than watts whenever product lumen information is available.
Fixture Count Is Not the Same as Fixture Placement
Even if a room needs six fixtures, their exact positions depend on ceiling height, beam angle, fixture type, furniture layout, task areas, shadows, architectural features, and applicable electrical requirements.

How many lumens do I need per square foot?
The appropriate amount varies by room type, task, surface colors, fixture efficiency, and personal preference. This calculator uses broad planning ranges rather than a universal fixed value.
Does this calculator tell me where to install recessed lights?
No. It estimates light quantity only. Exact recessed-light placement depends on ceiling height, beam angle, spacing, furniture, task zones, structural conditions, and electrical requirements.
Should I use watts or lumens when buying bulbs?
Lumens are more useful for comparing brightness. Watts indicate energy use and can vary considerably between different lighting technologies.
Does wall color affect lighting?
Yes. Dark surfaces generally reflect less light than light-colored surfaces, which can affect how bright a room feels.
Is this an electrical design tool?
No. It provides a general planning estimate and is not a substitute for electrical design, code review, fixture photometric analysis, or professional installation advice.
