How Many Tiles Do I Need?
To estimate the number of tiles required, first calculate the total surface area. The calculator then determines the area covered by one tile and divides the surface area by the tile area.
A waste allowance is added because installation normally involves cuts, breakage, damaged tiles, pattern alignment, and spare material for future repairs.

How Much Extra Tile Should You Buy?
Tile Pattern Can Affect Waste
A straight grid usually produces fewer offcuts than more complex layouts. Offset, diagonal, herringbone, or other decorative patterns may require additional material because more tiles must be cut at walls and edges.
The pattern selector in this calculator is provided mainly to help you consider this factor. Your selected waste allowance ultimately determines how much extra material is included.
Tile Calculator Questions
Should I round up the number of tiles?
Yes. You cannot normally purchase a fraction of a tile, so the calculator rounds the required quantity up to the next whole tile.
Does this calculator account for grout joints?
The calculation uses the nominal tile dimensions entered. Small grout joints usually have limited effect on a basic purchasing estimate, but detailed layout planning may require additional measurements.
Why do I need extra tiles?
Additional tiles can cover cuts, accidental damage, breakage, color or batch matching, and future repairs.
Can I use this calculator for wall tile?
Yes. Enter the wall width and height as the surface dimensions. For several separate walls, calculate each area individually or combine their total area before entering it.
